      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is expanded form?

Writing a number as the sum of the value of each of its digits: 4,305 = 4,000 + 300 + 5. Zero places are left out, which is how it's normally taught. The generator can go either direction -- number to expanded form, or expanded form back to the standard number.

What's the difference between "value of the digit" and "name the place"?

In 4,305 the 3 is in the hundreds place (the name), and it's worth 300 (the value). Both question types underline one digit; the answer key gives the digit, its place, and its value so either can be checked quickly.

Which number size fits which grade?

Roughly: 2-3 digits in first and second grade, 4 digits in second and third, 5-6 digits in third and fourth, and millions from fourth grade on. Pick the size that matches what the student is working on.

Why does the underlined digit never seem to be a zero?

On purpose. "What is the value of the 0" is a trick question at this level, so the generator picks numbers and positions where the underlined digit is 1-9.
