  • Borrowing in subtraction undoes the carrying that addition problems practice, so the addition generator uses the same digit-count and regrouping controls.

  • Borrowing means regrouping one ten into ten ones, which the place value generator shows explicitly with expanded and standard form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "borrowing" or "regrouping" mean in subtraction?

When the top digit in a column is smaller than the bottom one, you borrow a ten from the next column. 42 − 17 needs it (2 is less than 7); 47 − 12 doesn't. The generator can produce sheets with no borrowing at all, sheets where every problem borrows, or a mix.

Will any answers be negative?

No. The larger number is always on top, so every answer is zero or positive -- the way subtraction is taught before negative numbers are introduced.

Which setting matches which grade?

As a rough guide: 1-digit facts in kindergarten and first grade, 2-digit without borrowing in first grade, 2-digit with borrowing in second grade, and 3-digit with borrowing in second and third grade.

Can I get the same worksheet again?

Each click of Generate makes a new random set, so print (or save as PDF from the print dialog) before generating another if you want to keep a specific sheet. The answer key always matches the sheet currently on screen.
